Game flow

The first location, Bag End , is placed face up on the table and is the current location at the beginning. Each player receives six cards from his deck of cards. The game is played in clockwise order. The player whose turn it is places one or more cards in a place around the current location according to the following rules and then adds six cards again.

  • At least one card must be placed
  • Any number of cards with the value 1 or one card with a higher value can be created
  • Card 0 can be played instead of or in addition to other cards.
  • The following applies to a Nazgûl:
    • Like card 0, it can be played instead of or in addition to another card.
    • If it is placed on an opposing card, the Nazgûl and the opposing card are removed from play.
    • If the Nazgûl is played on a free space, it is immediately removed from the game.
  • In addition, a ring leaf may be played on this card together with a card.
    • No ring leaves may be played with a Nazgûl
    • A card with a ring leaf is protected against being overwritten with the help of higher cards and the Nazgûl.

In white places, a card may only be placed in a free space, in a black place, cards with a higher value may be placed over cards with a lower value, but not over cards that are protected with a ring (always the case with hobbits) . If a player puts the tenth card in a place, then this is completely enclosed and is scored.

Scoring a place

Each player adds up the values of his cards at this location. The player with the highest total gets the best rating, the one with the second highest number gets the second best rating, etc. The player with the lowest score always gets empty. If there is a tie among several players, preference is given to the player who first follows the player who placed the last card in clockwise order.

After the scoring, the player who placed the last card at a location determines the location of the next current location. The orientation of the new location must match the old one and must be placed on at least one of the cards already on display. Ring properties can also affect the new location.

Playing

If a player runs out of cards, he continues to play until his hand is used up. Then the game continues without him.

The game ends either
  • if no player has any more cards (the current location is scored regardless of whether all seats are occupied) or
  • if only one player has cards after scoring a location .

Game rules change for two players

Each player receives two colors and shuffles the cards of both colors together. Both colors can be played out in combination.

However, the colors are rated individually.
