The district (artists' association Lake Constance area)

The circle was an international artists' association whose members - writers, painters and sculptors - lived and worked in the area around Lake Constance .

The group Der Kreis was founded on December 18th (or 19th) 1925 by twelve like-minded artists and existed until 1937. The writer Norbert Jacques from Schlachters was one of the driving forces behind the establishment. He formulated the goals as follows: "The cultivation of the fine arts, in the awareness of the old ethnic and cultural unity of the western Upper German cultural area without considering the existing political national borders, state-political and intolerant ethnic goals are excluded [...]" and also took over its chairmanship.

When it became impossible for the artists' association to come together for exhibitions across national borders, its dissolution in 1937 was inevitable.
