Der Macher (also Herr Mercadet, also Der Speculant , also Mercadet or Waiting for Godeau ), in the original Mercadet le faiseur ( Honoré de Balzac ), is a play in five acts by Honoré de Balzac, German translation by Roland Bischoff, new translation by Erika Tophoven from 2016.

In the play, Mercadet and his wife Adeline want to marry off their daughter Julie. One of the candidates is targeting Madame. Meanwhile, Mercadet, plagued by his creditors, speculates with other people's money.

background

The piece, written from 1838 to 1840, was not premiered until 1851, a year after Balzac's death, at the Théâtre du Gymnase with Jean-Marie Geoffroy in the title role. The Comédie-Française successfully adopted the piece in its repertoire in 1868.

• André Hugon filmed the subject in 1936 as Le Faiseur ; in Germany the title was we all have debts , in Austria Mercadet , in the USA Mercadet .
• Richard Oswald filmed the material in 1949 as The Lovable Cheat .
