Piet on the gallows

The Piet on the gallows is a balladesque poem and song of Erik Martin , which the bard - and medieval folk scene as well as in Boy Scouts and bündisch sung groups in Germany.

With the beginning “What can I do for it?” In the first verse, Piet laments his bleak fate, he is caught on his doorstep and knows that he will die on the gallows. The second stanza reports that everything was taken from him and his house was set on fire, that no one helped him and he can already see the gallows. In the last stanza he feels the rope around his neck and hears a monk's prayer for death; the judgment is carried out. The refrain consists of the sentence: "When the fog descends on the moor, Piet hangs on the gallows".

Origin, interpretation and reception

The song Der Piet am Galgen comes from Erik Martin, who, under the name Mac, told numerous stories about Piet at campfires and from this material he formed the poem or song for the German Forest Youth . The author leaves it unclear who Piet's person is and what he has committed. From the line “A monk who prays there speaks pious words for me”; the word 'I don't know', who taught it to me? ”indicates that it comes from a very humble background. The author only gives a clue to the person, for example when he writes something about Piet's youth.

The melody in D minor is sung slowly and gives the song a gloomy, sad character. "It is reminiscent of Schinderhannes in content and textual structure to the the battered Schubart on the Hohenasperg wrote O wonderful luck ." The song is irritating to parodies, such as "When the night soars over mountains, we have long been frozen". The text was also set to music by other musicians, such as in 2007 by Mathew Rouse for the medieval band Die Streuner .

The song Der Piet am Galgen was written in 1981 and first appeared in the magazine der eisbrecher and was later published in numerous song books, including in the "Liederblätter deutscher Jugend" (1984), in "Liederbock", in "Bulibu II" (2001) and in the “Codex Patomomomensis” (2007) as well as on several CDs.
