The zither virtuoso, Karl Valentin, is invited to the stage by the announcer Adolf Gondrell after a humorous introduction to the zither . And a glissando on the highest string of his zither, which clearly does not end where it should end, he measures his instrument with a yardstick along with crumple sheets of music to find out where the possible mistake could be. In the end, he can no longer find the sign of a repetition in his "tattered" sheet music and plays this passage in an endless loop - under constant control of his "tattered" sheet music. The film apparently closes when the announcer draws the curtain, but the curtain opens again and you see Karl Valentin, gray with age, with a long white beard, who is still repeating the same passage.
