action

Chapter 1

Marco, a young photographer who has become known for his work in crisis areas, has retired to the country and does not yet know what will happen to him professionally. There he falls in love with the vet Émilie, but does not really want to commit himself and a fight ensues because she wants to have children at some point, a responsibility Marco does not want to bear. While he smokes “ fat bags ” with his brother every now and then in town , the visits to his parents are rather exhausting, especially since the father becomes forgetful. The friendly neighbor in the country turns out to be a former officer of his father's in the Algerian war  who tortured civilians. Marco breaks off contact with him. He realizes that he doesn't want to live without Émilie.

Chapter 2

Marco learns about his father 's Alzheimer's disease . The fact that his brother has now become the father of a daughter increases the pressure on him in his relationship with Émilie. Professionally things are looking up: his portraits of workers at a shipyard where his father used to work are shown in an exhibition together with works by well-known photographers. Shortly afterwards, his mother tells him that his father killed himself.

Chapter 3

After his father's funeral, Marco helps his mother clean up his father's legacy. He finds a diary in which only observations of nature and everyday occurrences are written down, but not a word about him or his brother. He speaks to his mother and his father's former work colleagues to find out more about his father, and most recently with his neighbor, the former officer. Professionally, things are getting better and better for Marco: his portraits of the shipyard workers are to be published in a book that will show the decline of this branch of industry. Émilie learns that she is pregnant.

Chapter 4

Marco and Émilie became parents of the little maude. While Marco is still struggling to take on the responsibility as a father, the shipyard with which he grew up was closed and demolished. His neighbor, his other connection to the past, has died and Marco only finds out about it by chance. Finally, Marco knows that he wants to remain a photographer.
