Lightbulbs Don't Grow on Trees is a film from the series The Special Day of Television in the GDR by Konrad Weiß from 1980, made by the DEFA studio for short films for preschool children .

action

Ms. Grosse is an unskilled worker who has been working for 14 years on a machine in the Berlin VEB Narva Kombinat Berliner Glühlampenwerk , which attaches the base of the incandescent lamps to the corresponding glass bulbs. While the camera is watching her work in the company, she talks about her everyday life, during which she also accompanies the film people.

She is divorced and at home alone with her three children. These are the two girls Angelika and Christine, one in the fourth grade and one in the second grade, as well as the boy Andreas, who is going to school next year. The children have to get up as early as five o'clock so that the mother gets to work on time, who quickly brings Andreas to kindergarten before her shift . In the afternoon, the girls do their homework in the after- school care center and then pick up their brother from kindergarten. They also try to help their mother with little household chores. Ms. Grosse plays the accordion and the two girls play the triola , so they can often make music together. At the weekend Mrs. Grosses friend Kurt comes. The kids like Kurt too and want him not only to be there on weekends. Kurt can bake and cook and does a lot of other household chores, so that Ms. Grosse has an easier time.
