The magical effect was a television broadcast by the SDR in cooperation with the television broadcaster arte about the art of magic .

In the 45-minute film, the magicians Paul Daniels, Volker Huber, Juan Tamariz and Wittus Witt tell and discuss the essence of magic. Some of them do their magic themselves and some of them are shown from film clips with historical recordings.

The idea for this documentary came from the filmmaker and screenwriter Peter Krieg. He had initially envisaged the magician David Copperfield for the project and Wittus Witt as a consultant. Witt made the suggestion to invite European magicians for it.

The shooting took place in Volker Huber's workrooms on January 24th and 25th, 1994.
