The theoretical part of the organ published by the executive committee of the GDR block party, the National Democratic Party of Germany, was published by Verlag der Nation since January 1961 under the title The National Democrat as a 'bi-monthly magazine of the National Democratic Party of Germany' . It replaced the party newspaper Die Nation , published since 1950 . The national democrat was published by the National-Zeitung from 1977 . Publication was discontinued in 1990 with issue 4/5 and the dissolution of the National Democratic Party of Germany.
In the first issue in 1961, the party executive outlined the function of the magazine: “It should become the indispensable political tool of all members and employees of our party, present the theoretical and practical questions of our party work in the most closely related manner and serve the exchange of experience on the best working methods. The content and design of our new magazine should be shaped by the opinions and wishes, questions and experiences of party friends and party units. "
Compared to the previous paper, The National Democrat was characterized by a much more lively layout (rubricing (b / w), multiple columns, images). Recurring rubrics were 'From the life of the party', 'The national democrat answers', 'Knowledge and work', 'Books for our work', 'Numbers · Drawings · Quotes', 'From the western press', 'Tackled and taken in' , 'Letter Discussion'. Lengthy documents from the party committees have been significantly reduced. Despite the changed appearance as well as the streamlining of the content, the character of the magazine of a GDR block party with real socialist phraseology ("Awakening pride in our achievements") was retained and a real debate culture was dispensed with.
