The nation is published with the subtitle "Journal for Theory and Practice of National Politics" as a monthly of the GDR block party National Democratic Party of Germany (NDPD) in the party's own publishing house from issue 1/1951 to issue 12/1960 (and special volumes) . Initially, the NDPD 's 'College for National Politics' acted as the publisher until the March issue of 1953 , after which the party executive took over this function. With the change of publisher, from issue 4/1953, an editorial board is also named, consisting of Siegfried Dallmann , Wolfgang Rösser and Otto Rühle (1956 also Hans Luthardt andErnst Herbert Förster ). From 1961, Die Nation appears as a bi-monthly publication under the title The National Democrat . This new magazine is supposed to “unite the tasks […] to find a solution so far Die Nation and the information sheet Voran! have tried ”.
The editions, which only occasionally have a thematic focus (e.g. "The lessons of the national liberation struggle"; Vol. 1, 1953) contain theoretical articles by v. a. Statements by functionaries from the apparatus of the NDPD.
The annual subject index differentiates thematically between national problems (national tradition, our national liberation struggle) and international problems (the relationship of trust between us Germans, the Soviet Union and the people's democracies, national liberation struggle of other peoples, the fight against the American monopoly rulers) . Various documents from party bodies (party congresses, main committee, party executive committee), whose resolutions, statements of accounts, appeals and contributions to discussions are reproduced, take up a lot of space. Occasionally, articles are also published as offprints in the National-Democratic series of publications (e.g. Lothar Bolz: Our middle class is building on socialism! The socialism of the German Democratic Republic is the foundation of peace in all of Germany! ).
