The cosmos bird guide
Collins Bird Guide (Subtitle: All kinds Europe, North Africa and the Middle East ; Swedish Original title: Fågelguiden ; the first German-language edition under the title of the new Cosmos bird guides ; in professional circles after the main author and "The Svensson" called) is a leader for the determination of birds in Europe , North Africa and the Middle East . The concept, descriptive texts and maps come from the Swedish ornithologist Lars Svensson with the support of Peter J. Grant; the illustrations were created by Dan Zetterström and Killian Mullarney.
With over 900 species, the guide comprehensively describes the bird world in Europe and the Mediterranean, including migrants, exceptional phenomena and naturalized species. The most important characteristics for identifying the animals are shown in more than 4,000 color drawings. Maps show distribution areas and migration routes. Despite the extensive content, the book is kept compact in format so that it can also be used as a "field guide", i. H. to be carried when observing in the field.
Svensson's bird guide is internationally regarded as one of the most comprehensive, current and best works of this kind and has established itself as the standard work of ornithology. More than 700,000 copies of the first edition alone were sold, more than 70,000 of them in Germany. The German edition is recommended by NABU , among others .
history
The guide was first published in 1999 under the original Swedish title Fågelguiden . It soon became a popular guide for bird watchers across Europe and has been translated into 14 languages. The book was published in German by Christine Barthel, published by Franckh-Kosmos (KOSMOS for short) under the title Der neue Kosmos-Vogelführer . The internationally popular English version was published by HarperCollins UK (Collins for short) under the title Collins Bird Guide .
A second, revised and expanded edition followed ten years after the original edition. The revision had become particularly necessary because new findings at the turn of the millennium had led to considerable changes in the ornithological taxonomy . In German, the second edition, again published by Kosmos, now translated by Peter H. Barthel, had the abbreviated title Der Kosmos-Vogelführer (without “new”).
Since 2012, in addition to the normal edition, a “superb edition” has also been offered in large format.
Remarks
- ↑ Inconsistent spelling of the title, mostly with spaces , i. H. without a hyphen, sometimes (e.g. on the spine of the book) but also with a hyphen.
- ↑ Not to be confused with the Kosmos bird guide for on the go (Frank Hecker, Katrin Hecker: Kosmos bird guide for on the go . Kosmos, 2008, ISBN 978-3-440-11130-7 . )
- ↑ a b c The " new " in the title of the first German edition was apparently added in order to distinguish it from the older Kosmos-Vogelführer (Bertel Bruun, Arthur Singer, Claus König : Der Kosmos-Vogelführer. The birds of Germany and Europe in color . Kosmos, 1972, ISBN 3-440-03760-6 . ). With the second edition, the "new" in the title was dropped.
