The avenue extends to the Green Line, the part under the control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is 1,600 meters long with two lanes. British rule

During the British colonial rule, the avenue was known as "Shakespeare Avenue". Older generations preferred the name "Mehmet Akif Avenue", but it was described as "dere boyundaki cadde" ("the avenue along the river") because the avenue is along Kanlı Dere . The British administration built an elevated road, the so-called "Irish Bridge", over the river, but it was flooded in winter. The Cyprus Government Railway route from Nicosia to Morfou / Güzelyurt ran through the avenue. The area around the avenue was known as "Tabakhane".
