Derek Walcott Square is a square and green space in the center of Castries , St. Lucia .

Originally the square was called Place d'Armes . It has been renamed several times: Promenade Square and 1892 Columbus Square . In 1993 it was renamed in honor of the writer Derek Walcott , who received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature .

geography

The square is in the center of town, just a few meters north of the Castries River . It is bordered by Bourbon Street , Brazil Street , Laborie Street and Micoud Street . On the northeast corner, at the intersection of Micoud and Bourbon Streets, is the Castries Central Library , while Castries Cathedral dominates the east side of the square. Government buildings with Constitution Park and Bideau Park also extend from there in the extension to the north .

The park's green area is divided into equal-sized rectangles by four paths. There are two monuments on the western path and in the center, while there is space for an orchestra pavilion under large trees in the eastern section.
