Interior of the cathedral

The Cathedral of Castries or Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception ( German  Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception ) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Castries the West Indian island of St. Lucia . The church on Derek Walcott Square in the center of the island's capital, Castries , has the patronage of the Conception of Mary .

In place of some of the previous buildings that have stood here since the 18th century, today's church was built from 1897 to 1931 and consecrated that year. With a length of 61 meters and a width of 30 meters, it is the largest in the Caribbean. The interior is magnificently painted with biblical scenes, including the trompe l'œil pillars. In preparation for the Pope's visit by John Paul II on July 7, 1986, the well-known local painter Dunstan St. Omer created the murals in 1985 and, with his son Giovanni, designed twelve stained glass windows with Stations of the Cross in 2005 . On May 11, 1999, one hundred years after the first mass, the cathedral was also awarded the title of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II .
