The Dermateaceae form a family of fungi within the order of the Helotiales .

features

The Dermateaceae form small, flat to concave, mostly sessile apoothecia as fruiting bodies , which are gray-brown or black in color. In some species they are sunk into the plant tissue. Sometimes the fruit bodies also have a special opening mechanism. Usually they have a well-defined border, which is often downy, but sometimes also covered with distinct hair. The excipulum consists of more or less brown, thin or thick-walled isodiametric cells. The layer between the tubes consists of simple paraphyses . The tubes themselves are usually cylindrical to cylindrical-clubbed and small and with a clearly developed amyloid (which can be stained with iodine) or inamyloid apical ring . The ascospores are small, hyaline, and often elongated, and can be septate or unseptate. A stroma is not usually formed. Minor fruit forms can be different, there are hyphomycetic and coelomycetic forms.

ecology

Dermateaceae are common worldwide. The species live saprotrophically or parasitically on herbaceous or woody plants. There are also pests of plants that cause economically important diseases, such as the spray blotch disease caused by Blumeriella jaapii , the shotgun disease caused by Wilsonomyces carpophilus or the sooty mildew ( Diplocarpon rosae ).

Systematics

Elias Magnus Fries described the family in 1849 as a dermatome . James William Kimbrough then raised them to family rank in 1970. The family is likely polyphyletic but has been very poorly studied. The following genera belong to the Dermateaceae family:
