Dermography on a forearm

The medical term dermographism (syn. Dermographism, Greek derma - "skin", graphein - "writing") means something like skin writing or skin drawing. The medical appearance was first described in 1858.

Manifestations

In normal cases, so-called dermographism ruber (red dermographism) occurs. It describes the typical red streaks that appear due to vasodilation after brushing the skin with a blunt pencil or wooden spatula. In so-called dermographism albus (white dermographism), characteristic white stripes appear after mechanical irritation of the skin as a result of vasoconstriction . The white dermographism indicates the increased tendency to atopy . The urticarial Dermographism (quaddelförmiger Dermographism) is a symptom of urticaria factitia or mastocytosis ( Darier's sign ) and arises due to an increased histamine -Ausschüttung.
