Dermophis donaldtrumpi
According to press reports, Dermophis donaldtrumpi is intended to be the scientific name for an as yet unspecified, underground caecum from the family Dermophiidae that wasdiscoveredin Panama . The namesake would be the US President Donald Trump .
Surname
The British company EnviroBuild secured the naming rights at an auction by the Rainforest Trust for approx. € 22,000. The proceeds from the auction go to the conservation of the species' habitats. As a justification for the auction and naming, the company cites parallels between the way of life of the underground and almost blind animal and Trump's attitude towards climate policy . In addition, as an amphibian, it is particularly affected by the consequences of climate change.
Trivia
Dermophis donaldtrumpi would be the third species named after Donald Trump. The other two are a species of moth described in 2017 with yellow-white scaling named Neopalpa donaldtrumpi and in 2016 a more than 110 million year old sea urchin fossil Tetragramma donaldtrumpi .
