Neopalpa donaldtrumpi is a butterfly from the family of gelechiidae (Gelechiidae). The Canadian entomologist Vazrick Nazari chose the specific epithet because of what , inhis opinion, is amusing similarity between the scaling of the butterfly's head and the hairstyle of the 45th President of the United States , Donald Trump . Nazari hopes that this will also attract more attention to very small and rare animal species.
features
butterfly
The fore wing length of the males is 3.0 to 4.6 millimeters, in females 4.3 millimeters were measured. The front wings are pointed and dark brown in the upper half. Some lighter points stand out. The lower half is yellowish to ocher brown up to the inner edge . The hind wings are strongly fringed and have a whitish color. The head has clear yellowish to whitish scales and hairs.
Similar species
Neopalpa neonata , the only other species in the genus, can be distinguished by the less well-developed scaling of the head. A genital morphological examination can be used forreliable differentiation. DNA barcoding analyzes showed a difference of 4.9 to 5.1% between Neopalpa neonata and Neopalpa donaldtrumpi .
distribution and habitat
While Neopalpa neonata is widespread in northwest Mexico , the entire Baja California peninsula and all of California , Neopalpa donaldtrumpi has so far only been found in Riverside County and Imperial County in southern California and in the middle of Baja California. The species prefers to live in dry, sandy areas. The holotype of Neopalpa donaldtrumpi is a specimen from the Algodones dunes .
Way of life
The moths were detected in artificial light sources in February, April, June and August . Further details on the way of life are currently not available.
