Descent: The journey into the dark (English Descent: Journeys in the Dark) is a board game from the fantasy area .

background

Similar to Hero Quest or Talisman , this game is based on fantasy role-playing games . Originally the game was published by Fantasy Flight Games . The game has no connection to the Descent computer game series, but with the previously published Doom board game, which is based on the computer game of the same name.

The game shares a fantasy universe called " The Realms of Terrinoth " with Runebound and other games. The author is Kevin Wilson. It was published in German in 2006 by Heidelberger Spieleverlag .

Game description

Up to four players each choose a hero and try to complete a task as a group in a dungeon set up according to instructions . Opposite them is another player who takes on the role of overlord . In the dungeon, the hero group encounters monsters and traps that are commanded by the overlord. To survive, the heroes need to upgrade their equipment and be tactical. Each hero has movement, health and stamina points as well as an armor value. A certain distribution of melee, ranged and magic talents ensures a distribution of roles within the group. The game is turn-based, so that heroes and overlord always move in turns.

The aim of the heroes is to complete the task set at the beginning, while the overlord wins the game if he manages to kill enough heroes. In addition to the possibility of activating the monsters that are present from the ground up, the overlord cards are available to him, with which he can create new monsters, reinforce existing monsters, play traps or add new permanent effects to the dungeon.

The fight is fought over a dice system, in which the basic talents of the heroes and monsters, as well as equipment and special abilities influence which and how many dice are rolled.

A game of descent

Extensions first edition

Several extensions have already been released for Descent:

  • 1.Descent: Source of Darkness (2007)
  • 2. Descent: Altar of Despair (2008)
  • 3. Descent: Roads to Fame (May 2009)
  • 4.Descent: Crypt of Ice (December 2009)
  • 5.Descent: Horrors of the Sea of Blood (August 2010)

While the 1st, 2nd and 4th expansions mainly bring new game elements, a campaign system is being introduced in Paths to Glory , which goes into the second round in Terror of the Sea of Blood . In addition, 4 separate hero characters and 10 miniatures belonging to the "Paths to Glory" campaign expansion have been released.

Extensions second edition

In October 2012, the second edition of Descent appeared, which, in addition to some rule changes, also contains the campaign system. In order to be able to play the first edition and its extensions according to the new rules, an upgrade kit was released at the same time . In the period that followed, only extensions to the second edition appeared.

Type of extensions

For the second edition there are different types of extensions, each with different content:

  • Big expansion: A complete campaign including Acts I + II, new heroes, new monsters, new captains, new map tiles
  • Small expansion: mini campaign (can be played individually or in combination with the basic game campaign), new heroes, new monsters, new captains, new map tiles
  • Co-op expansion: Campaign to play Descent 2 without an overlord.
  • Captain set: a modeled captain figure, threat tokens, action cards, leader card
  • Heroes and Monster Set: new heroes, new monsters, new quests
  • Campaign Books: A full-fledged campaign as a hardcover book

While the hero and monster sets only bring more heroes and monsters into play, most of the other expansions also add new campaigns. Only the Lindwurm's Cave adds side quests and secret rooms to the game, and Forgotten Souls replaces the overlord player with a card system so that only one to four players play the heroes together. In addition, the dice can be purchased as a set, as well as 17 plastic figures that can be used for the captains of the overlord. These are usually symbolized by cardboard markers. The captain packs also bring the new element of threat tokens into play, with which the overlord can use new action cards that involve the respective captain more in the campaigns. Most of the products in the second edition were translated into German by Stephan Rothschuh.
