The Desert Express has been a Namibian luxury train since April 3, 1998 under the responsibility of the state-owned transport company TransNamib . It operated weekly between Windhoek and Swakopmund until the beginning of 2015 . Since then it has been overhauled and renovated. A transfer of the train to a new company is also planned. The Desert Express has been running every two weeks since August 23, 2019. Operations are to be maintained until at least March 2020. [outdated]

The Desert Express has 24 suites in four cars , as well as one car each with a restaurant, bar and lounge. It was voted the 7th most luxurious train in the world by The New Zealand Herald in early 2015.
