from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Desiderius von Cahors (* around 590 in Obrege , † November 15, 655 in Wistrilingo near Albi ) was Bishop of Cahors . He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church (feast day November 15).

Desiderius was born in Obrege in the southern part of Aquitaine . He came from a wealthy family. His father Salvius came from Albi (Bishop Salvius von Albi, attested from 574 to 584, is likely to be a grandfather of Desiderius). With his brothers Rusticus (later Bishop of Cahors) and Syagrius (later Count of Albi) he was educated at the court of the Frankish King Chlothar II . He held the office of the Treasurer (Thesaurarius), which he also under King I. Scrooge kept. After the inhabitants of Cahors killed his brother Rusticus in 630, he was ordained Bishop of Cahors. He founded the St. Amant monastery near Cahors, which was later named St-Géry after its founder. After his death, he was buried in the monastery he had founded, and his bones were later transferred to the Cathedral of Cahors .
