The Despair Rocks ( English , Spanish Rocas Desesperación , each translatable with despair rocks ) are a group of rocks in the archipelago of South Orkneys . They are 3 km south of Melsom Rocks and 12 km west-southwest of Penguin Point , the northwest tip of Coronation Island .
The American sealer captain Nathaniel Palmer and his British counterpart George Powell discovered the cliffs in December 1821 while exploring the South Orkney Islands together. The further naming background has not been passed down.
