The Desperation Gully ( English for despair gutter is) a steep-walled canyon on the island of Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean . It lies between the Challenger Glacier and neighboring cliffs. The gorge is part of the route from Atlas Cove to Saddle Point . It starts at sea level and rises to over 200 m .
It has been named after the first campaigns of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions to Heard Island. The further naming background has not been passed down.
