The FFH area Rehbergholz and Schwennholz is a NATURA 2000 protected area in Schleswig-Holstein in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in the municipality of Mittelangeln . It has an area of 193 ha and consists almost entirely of deciduous forest . The largest extension is in a north-easterly direction at 2.87 km, the highest point is on the western edge and is 50.7 m above sea level. The area is divided from north to south by the L22 state road. The western part is the Schwennholz and the larger eastern part is the Rehbergholz, which is also often referred to as "Süderholz" on maps. It is the largest contiguous wooded area in the fishing landscape . which existed more than 200 years ago and is entered as such on the map of the Danish cartographer Johann Heinrich Christian du Plat of the Duchy of Schleswig from 1805. Even then, a country road separated the two areas. It is rich in all kinds of small bodies of water. The FFH area is fully owned by the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests , an institution under public law .
FFH area history and nature conservation area
The NATURA 2000 standard data sheet for this FFH area Rehbergholz and Schwennholz was created in May 2004 by the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas (LLUR) of Schleswig-Holstein, and in September 2004 by the EU nature conservation authority as an area of community importance (GGB) proposed, confirmed by the EU as GGB in November 2007 and confirmed nationally as a special conservation area (BEG) in January 2010 in accordance with § 32 Paragraph 2 to 4 BNatSchG in conjunction with § 23 LNatSchG. In April 2010 the management plan for the FFH area Rehbergholz and Schwennholz was published by the then Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. This is updated continuously. The biotope and habitat types were mapped in 2005. Another map shows the protected biotopes in the area. The Hechtmoor nature reserve is located in the north-west in the immediate vicinity .
FFH conservation object
4 habitat types according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive of the EU environmental authority were reported as FFH conservation objects (as of May 2017). They take up 88.5% of the area:
- 3150 Natural and semi-natural nutrient-rich pond with pondweed - or frogbit societies
- 9110 Grove beech forests
- 9130 Woodruff beech forests
- 91E0 Alder , ash and softwood alluvial forests
FFH conservation objectives
Two habitat types according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive were identified as conservation goals of particular importance (as of July 11, 2016):
- 9130 Woodruff beech forests
- 91E0 Alder, ash and softwood alluvial forests
As conservation objectives of importance 2 habitat types were determined according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive:
- 3150 Natural and near-natural nutrient-rich still waters with spawning or frog-bite groups
- 9110 Grove beech forests
FFH analysis and assessment
The FFH analysis and assessment in the management plan serves the purpose of working out approaches for conservation and development measures.
FFH catalog of measures
For all forest areas of the Schleswig-Holstein state forests, separate principles of action apply in NATURA 2000 areas. These ensure compliance with the prohibition of deterioration in these areas. The catalog of measures is part of the management plan. The area-specific focus of measures is recorded on a map. These are essentially forest conversion (reduction in the coniferous forest, reduction in the number of invasive species, increase in the proportion of natural forest), the preservation of the forest edge, as well as the creation of natural water obstacles in order to raise the groundwater level and improve the development of the many small biotopes.
FFH success control and monitoring of the measures
Monitoring takes place in Schleswig-Holstein every 6 years. The first mapping of the habitat types of the FFH area took place in 2005. In 2010 the first follow-up mapping was carried out as part of the monitoring. In the biotope type follow-up mapping, the biotope types brook (FP), ditch (FG), floodplain forest and bushes (WA) and forest light corridor (WO) have been added, while the biotope types artificial or artificially overprinted still waters (FX) and Pionierwald (WP) have fallen out completely. The mapped area designated as a biotope type has increased by 0.4 ha. The subsequent mapping was combined with a sighting of other plant species. The plant species listed in the early warning list of Schleswig-Holstein's Red List were spotted: bitter foam herb , water feather , water primrose and mountain elm . With regard to the habitat types, the first follow-up mapping showed in some cases considerable differences to the initial mapping in the assessment by the respective commissioned companies. The area of the mapped FFH habitat types in the area increased from 142.82 ha to 171.01 ha. This applies in particular to the habitat type "Woodruff beech forest", the area of which in the first subsequent mapping increased from 142.73 ha to 167, 37 ha increased. This discrepancy is presumably due to the fact that in the map of the initial mapping the areas with the biotope type “Other area-based forest with a large area of use” are excluded from the habitat type mapping, see map.
As of July 20, 2020, the area marked as a natural forest with signs also includes the two inland Jagen 388 and 390, which are always on the right hand side when using the large circular hiking trail clockwise. This means that the inner area of the Rehbergholz from Jagen 386 at the parking lot via 388 to 390 is completely designated as a natural forest. From 1990 to 2009 5% of the forest area of the state forests was withdrawn from forestry use and declared a natural forest. Exemplary for all FFH areas of the state forests are the many notice and information boards on the work and the goals of the state forests, see picture gallery.
