The German-Omani Society is a registered non-profit association to promote friendship between people in the Federal Republic of Germany and the Sultanate of Oman . It is intended to promote relations between the two peoples in the cultural, scientific and sporting fields.

Origin and tasks

The society was founded on September 4, 1992 by 30 personalities from business, science, politics, culture and diplomacy. One of the German founding presidents was Ottfried Hennig . On the Omani side, the establishment of the company was effectively promoted by the ambassador at the time, Shaikh Saud Sulayman al-Nabhani.

The statutory purposes include, among others

  • Organization of seminars and conferences in both countries
  • Dissemination of information on cultural and scientific developments in both countries
  • Organization and support of mutual visits
  • Organization of sporting events (e.g. soccer tournaments)
  • Organization of exhibitions
  • Initiation of German-Omani town twinning
  • Promotion of the cooperation between the Sultan Qaboos University and German universities
  • Establishment of an Omani-German circle of friends in the Sultanate of Oman

The association supported the restoration of the world cultural heritage site in Bat together with the German Mining Museum and the Foreign Office . He was (co-) organizer of various exhibitions such as "Greetings from Oman" in the Museum for Communication Berlin in cooperation with the Bund Deutscher Philatelisten or "From Basra to Muscat" with photographs by Hermann Burchardt in cooperation with the Foreign Office.

The association is presented by the Foreign Office and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation as an example of cultural cooperation between Germany and Oman.

Current projects in 2019 and 2020 include a. an artist exchange in cooperation with the Stal Gallery in Muscat, in which the Omani artists work and live in the LIA (Leipzig International Artist Exchange) residency program in the creative center of the Leipzig cotton spinning mill.

Organs, members and seat of the association

The president of the association has been Wolfgang Zimmermann from Leipzig since November 2018. Honorary president of the society is the respective ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman in Germany

Honorary members of the association are Peter Ramsauer, former Federal Minister. D. and Fred Scholz.

The company is based in Berlin .
