The Sultan Qaboos University ( Arabic جامعة السلطان قابوس, DMG Ǧāmiʿat as-Sulṭān Qābūs , English Sultan-Qaboos University ; SQU) is a state university in Muscat , Oman .

History and structure of the university

On the tenth Omani National Day (counted from the Sultan's takeover in 1970 ), the Sultan of Oman Qaboos ibn Said first expressed his intention to found a university in Oman. In 1982 construction began on the university south of Sib in the Muscat Capital Area . In 1986 the first students started their studies. Initially, courses were offered in the subjects of education, agriculture, marine sciences, medicine and health care. In 1987 the subjects of art and social sciences were added. In 1993 the Commerce and Economics faculty was founded. Today the university has the following eight faculties:

The Sultan Qaboos University was the only university in the country until 2000. Next day (July 2011), there are five more private universities: University of Sohar , University of Nizwa , Dhofar University , University of Buraimi and the German University of Technology in Oman . The SQU is the only state university in Oman, although Sultan Qaboos has announced the establishment of another state university.

Science and research at the SQU

In the first few years after its establishment, the SQU concentrated on training prospective academics. Scientific research only began in 1999 . In 2001 additional research funds were allocated from the state budget and in 2003 joint research projects with the United Arab Emirates University began . In 2010, further research funding flowed from the Omani The Research Council (TRC) .

The SQU maintains a total of nine specialized research facilities for hydrology , environmental research , telecommunications , energy industry with a focus on oil and natural gas , blue biotechnology , seismology , remote sensing and geographic information systems , Oman studies and the humanities . There are currently (2012) three research chairs: one for blue biotechnology, a second for carbon research (financed by the mineral oil and natural gas company Royal Dutch Shell ) and a third for nanotechnology research with a focus on seawater desalination (financed by the TRC) . 78% of all Omani articles in refereed journals are made at the SQU. With an average of two contributions per faculty member per year, the international area is in the middle.

Currently (2012) the SQU publishes six scientific journals for the fields of medicine , engineering , oceanography and agricultural sciences , natural sciences , art history and social sciences and education . The articles in the medical and engineering journals were included in the international SCOPUS database and the WHO Index Medicus for the Eastern Mediterranean Region. recorded.

The SQU organizes various annual scientific conferences and supports local researchers in attending external scientific congresses.

Student numbers

16,494 students studied there in the 2010/11 academic year. Of these, 15,104 (= 91.6%) are studying in a Bachelor's degree and 1,390 (= 8.4%) in a postgraduate degree. In addition, 491 students completed their studies with a bachelor's degree and 116 with an advanced diploma (e.g. master's ).
