The University of Dhofar ( Arabic جامعة ظفار, DMG Ǧāmiʿat Ẓufār  'University of Dhofar', English Dhofar University ) is a private university in Salala in the Dhofar Governorate in the southwest of the Sultanate of Oman . It is listed on the Muscat Stock Exchange.

history

Sultan Qaboos issued royal decree 41/99 in 1999, which allowed the establishment of private universities in Oman. The government is supporting the establishment with a number of measures: Tax exemption for five years; Free building land, capital grants up to 50% of equity (maximum 3 million Omani rials ), government grants for students from low-income families. The government tries to ensure the quality of teaching through the mandatory cooperation with a recognized foreign university and the mandatory accreditation with the Oman Accreditation Council (OAC).

The establishment of the DU was approved by Regulation 5/2004 of the University Minister in January 2004. In September 2004 the university started its studies with its first year. The Dhofar University maintains an academic cooperation with the American University of Beirut, which runs until 2010.

The new campus was officially inaugurated on November 22, 2010. The premises include administration buildings, a library, buildings for the College of Arts and Applied Sciences , the College of Engineering and the College of Commerce and Administrative Sciences . In addition, lecture rooms, a leisure center and an auditorium with 1,300 seats were built, as well as a dormitory for 800 students and houses for the rector and the deans of the university. The total cost was over RO 30 million .

Basic course building

Like many private universities in the Arab Gulf States, the university does not enjoy a good academic reputation. She is accused of trimming the study program to maximize profit. In addition, grievances in administration and staff management became known. The basic course should not adequately prepare for the basic course . These inadequacies likely resulted in declining student numbers. These results (unqualified teaching staff, inadequate buildings, lack of resources, outdated teaching methods) are also confirmed by an independent study. In addition, the OAC started its work very slowly and has so far not been very successful in enforcing standards.

Student numbers

In the 2006/07 academic year, a total of 1564 students studied at the university. This is 14.3% less than in the previous year.
