The German Stage Hungary at garay tér 4 in Szekszárd

The German Stage Hungary (Magyarországi Német Színház) is a theater located in Szekszárd . It is the only stage in Tolna County and the only German-speaking theater in Hungary . Its main tasks include promoting and communicating the German language and safeguarding the cultural values of the German minority in Hungary. As such, it strengthens the cultural relations between the German minority and the Hungarian population. For the non-German speaking audience, the theater experience will be translated by surtitles and thus made accessible.

The building

The theater is located at Garay tér 4, Szekszárd , in an Art Nouveau building and former cinema, which burned down several times and was renovated. The building of the former World Moving Cinema was designed by János Uglár and built in 1913. In the city, this building represents the Austrian version of Art Nouveau.

According to contemporary descriptions, the district town's first permanent cinema was lavishly set up. The building burned down in the 1960s and was rebuilt in a much worse design. It was renovated in 1985 and served as a film museum from 1986. On May 7th it burned again. As a result of the third reconstruction, the original facade was restored, but the rest of the building is modern. A bank branch was set up in one wing.

Since 1999, a webcam has been transmitting the view of Garay tér from the balcony above the main entrance to the Internet.

history

The facility was founded in 1983 under the name "Deutsche Bühne Seksard ( Szekszárdi Német Színház)" by Tolna County . The first theater performance in German took place in 1984. Since January 1985, they have played in the chamber of the Babits Mihály community center under the name Deutsche Schaubühne ( Német Bemutató Színpad) . In 1994 they moved to their current location, in the converted building of the former cinema, where the premiere took place on November 24, 1994.

In 2003 the Hungarian federal authority signed an association agreement with the Tolna County Council and has been running the theater together since January 1, 2004. The federal government is involved in determining and selecting the head of the budget, broadcasting policy and institution. With the association agreement, the name of the institution was changed to German Stage Hungary (Magyarországi Német Színházzá).

The theater since 2010

Because the Hungarian-Germans are spread all over the country, especially in western Hungary , the German Stage in Hungary takes on tasks of a regional theater comparable to those in Germany. So there are not only performances in the main building in Szekszárd, but they also bring most of the performances to the most important centers of Hungarian Germanness (Pécs, Veszprém, Mór, Sopron, Budapest). In autumn 2005, for example, the program organized in honor of the Schiller Year was played in 18 municipalities in the state with the support of the Donauschwäbischen Kulturstiftung. The ensemble has played several times in Austria and Germany, and has also been a guest in China. There is a permanent partnership with the German-Sorbian Theater in Bautzen .

The annual Valeria Koch Day (Hungarian-German poet), which takes place in April, commemorates the outstanding events and personalities of Germans in Hungary.

The theater employs 26 people, including 7 actors. The directors of various origins (German, Hungarian, Romanian, French, Israeli) are hired as guests.

There is administrative cooperation on the part of the self-government of the Hungarian Germans .
