history
Deutsche Frühstücksei was founded in 1990 in Berlin as a producer group.
On February 1, 1996, Deutsche Frühstücksei took over the chicken farms owned by the "chicken baron" Anton Pohlmann and thus advanced to become the market leader in Germany.
Until 2007, the group held a stake in Heidegold Holding GmbH & Co. KG for five years , which according to the 2015 Foodwatch Report is currently number two on the German egg market.
For many years, one of the central people in the group was General Manager Gert Stuke, who, however, gave up his post at the end of 2012.
Group structure
With Ovobest Eiprodukte GmbH & Co. KG, the company also has its own plant, which primarily produces primary products ( liquid egg , scrambled eggs , powdered eggs , etc.) for the food industry .
In addition to Ovobest, Deutsche Frühstücksei has a stake of 85 to 100% in 17 other companies and 42.5% in two others.
The main shareholder is Rolf Janssen through the All Contract Gesellschaft für Unternehmensvermittlung with 50 percent, other shareholders are the companies Uhlenberg Frischei, von Lehmden, the agricultural industrialist Aloys Hinxlage and the family of the late Werner Schockemöhle .
criticism
In April 2006, the nicotine scandal surrounding the German breakfast egg company became known. In several of the company's 19 operations, nicotine and its breakdown substance cotinine had been found on feathers of chickens and in eggs, the Oldenburg public prosecutor's office investigated. As a result, 50,000 eggs were recalled and more than 50 million eggs from 19 farms with over 100 houses were destroyed in the period that followed.
In the course of the Fipronil scandal in 2017 , the animal rights organization PETA accused the German breakfast egg of purchasing eggs from the Netherlands, repackaging them in Germany and selling them in some cases with a stamp for German origin. This also affected eggs contaminated with fipronil . PETA had already protested against German breakfast eggs and accused them of continuing to keep cages under the euphemistic name of “small groups”.
At the beginning of August 2017, the animal welfare organization PETA and after research by Report Mainz published the ARD video recordings from the stables of the German breakfast egg. There were numerous severely ill and injured animals to be seen, tens of thousands of which are crammed together in cages or barns . In a press release from PETA it said, "Chickens with broken bones, inflammation and parasites shape the picture in the stables". The organization filed a complaint for violating the Animal Welfare Act.
