German Society for Foreign Language Research
The German Society for Foreign Language Research ( DGFF) is a registered association based in Düsseldorf , whose aim is to promote research activities related to foreign languages ( foreign language research ). From a psycholinguistic perspective, this involves research into the acquisition and use of second languages as well as the phenomenon of multilingualism, and from a special foreign language didactic perspective, research into teaching and learning of foreign languages in schools, especially in an intercultural context.
aims
In order to promote the scientifically justified further development of the teaching and learning of foreign and second languages in universities, schools and other educational institutions, the DGFF supports German and international research activities in the above-mentioned foreign language-related areas. To this end, it advocates the promotion of young scientists and the safeguarding of the appropriate institutional conditions in the scientific universities.
In pursuit of these goals, the DGFF financially supports regional research symposia and the publications resulting from them and organizes annual junior conferences as well as (since 1990) the "Congresses for Foreign Language Didactics" that take place every two years at a different university location. In addition, as the DGFF's scientific publication organ, it publishes the journal for foreign language research (two issues a year) and the book series Contributions to Foreign Language Research.
history
The initiative to found the association arose in 1988 from the annual spring conference at Rauischholzhausen Castle on research into foreign language teaching. It was founded on February 18, 1989 at the University of Essen by Werner Hüllen , Gerda Lauerbach, Dorothea Möhle, Helmut Sauer, Johannes-Peter Timm , Helmut Johannes Vollmer and Günther Zimmermann. Werner Hüllen became the first chairman, Dorothea Möhle second chairman and Helmut Sauer, treasurer.
- "Through the interaction of foreign language didactics and language teaching research , their weights in the context of research-oriented scientific organizations and teacher training should be strengthened and the non-organized work meetings of foreign language didactics, which had developed into considerable congresses, should be placed on an organizational basis good neighbors with the FMF (= professional association for modern foreign languages ) and other organizations and reinforce the use of the FMF at the school level through that of the DGFF at the college and university level. "
The current (2016–2017) board consists of Lars Schmelter, University of Wuppertal (1st chairman), Karin Vogt, University of Education Heidelberg (2nd chair) and Jürgen Mertens, University of Education Ludwigsburg (treasurer).
