Johannes-Peter Timm (born November 7, 1942 in Baden-Baden ), alternative name: Hannespeter Timm , is a German linguist ( English studies ) and didactic specialist for modern foreign languages, especially English. Until his retirement in autumn 2000, he was Professor of Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Didactics at the Heidelberg University of Education .

Life

Timm grew up in Villingen in the Black Forest , where he attended grammar school (later: grammar school at Romäusring ). After graduating from high school in 1962, he studied English (with Herbert Pilch and others), Romance studies (with Hugo Friedrich , Helmut Lüdtke and Olaf Deutschmann ), philosophy and education (with Eugen Fink ) at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg im Breisgau and the University of Bristol in Bristol (England). In 1967 and 1969, respectively, he passed the 1st and 2nd state examinations for teaching at grammar schools and from 1969 to 1970 was a university assistant for English and French at the Lörrach University of Education . In 1979 he received his doctorate from the University of Essen under Werner Hüllen with the subjects of English, Romance studies and pedagogy. phil. In 1970 he was appointed as a lecturer of English at the University of Education Heidelberg appointed . From 1971 to 1974 he headed the English faculty committee of the Integrated Comprehensive School Mannheim-Herzogenried . In 1974 he was appointed Professor of Linguistics , Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Didactics . From 1979 to 1981 he was deputy head, 1981 to 1985 head of Faculty II at the Heidelberg University of Education. From 1985 to 1986 he taught for a year of research and further training at the secondary school in Neckargemünd . From 1985 to 1999 he was a member of the spring conference on research into foreign language teaching , and in 1989 co-founder of the resulting German Society for Foreign Language Research (DGFF). In this context, together with Helmut Johannes Vollmer, he developed a systematic conception of foreign language research as an umbrella term for the disciplines of foreign language didactics, language teaching research and second language acquisition research. Timm has been retired since autumn 2000. He lives in Regensburg.

Research priorities

In his publications, Timm moved from a formal to a language-use oriented linguistics and from a school-related applied linguistics to foreign language teaching that their focus is not on instructional teaching method is aimed, but of instructional on promoting learning processes in an action-oriented teaching. In this context he introduced the concept of learning orientation in foreign language didactics .

Timm's main research interests were in the areas of grammar teaching , holism , action orientation , interlanguage and dealing with student errors . His books on holistic and action-oriented foreign language teaching are standard literature in the training and further education of foreign language teachers.
