The Associação Atlética Internacional , also known as Inter de Limeira , is a football club from Limeira , a city about 150 km northwest of São Paulo in the interior of the Brazilian state of the same name with around a quarter of a million inhabitants.

In 1986 the club won under coach Pepe - as a player one of the great stars of FC Santos of Pele era - the first team from outside the metropolitan São Paulo and Santos , the state championship .

In the final of the competition, Inter defeated the capital city club Palmeiras . Inters João Leithardt Neto, fighting name "Kita", was also the top scorer of the competition with a remarkable 24 goals.

So far only in 1990 the CA Bragantino , a team from Bragança Paulista , an even smaller city, managed to win the state title as a provincial team.

In its heyday, Internacional was also in second place nationally in 1986 and 1988 and was eligible to play in the Brazilian Série B. These days, however, the club is only second rate even at the state level.

founding

On October 3, 1913, the players and members of the workers' club "Barroquinha" decided to found a professional club and set monthly membership fees. Two days later they founded the new association, the name of which was supposed to reflect the cultural diversity of the city of Limeira, populated by immigrants from Italy, Japan, Germany and Portugal.

The name of the club was probably also chosen based on the capital club SC Internacional , which was successful at the time but was absorbed into São Paulo FC in later years .

Stadion

Internacional plays its home games in the urban Estádio Major José Levy Sobrinho , commonly known as Limerão . The sports facility, which was inaugurated in 1977 with a game against the capital's club SC Corinthians - the guests won 3-2 - has a capacity of around 40,000 spectators these days. At the opening match, 44,000 people attended, which is a record to date.
