Life

Hüllen spent his childhood and youth in Cologne. After military service and imprisonment in France, he studied English, German and philosophy at the University of Cologne from 1946 to 1952. In 1951 he did his doctorate in Cologne with Richard Alewyn with a dissertation on the expressionist poet Theodor Däubler . 1952–1953 he was lecturer for German at the German Department of the University of Birmingham (UK), from 1953 to 1963 in high school service (mainly) in Düsseldorf. Act

Hüllen's ten years as a high school teacher shaped his pedagogical as well as didactic skills and later also made him see foreign language teaching as a complex that was shaped by a variety of interacting factors . While his publications in the 1960s still mainly dealt with literary studies, foreign language didactic, especially language didactic publications only gained the upper hand from the 1970s. Initially (1971) he primarily referred to the linguistic theories of linguistic structuralism ; but soon (from 1973) his linguistic approach broadened and included more and more pragmalinguistic and interaction- analytical factors of human communication. From this time on, Hüllen's work focus shifted from foreign language didactics to empirical foreign language teaching and learning research , i.e. research into the interaction of specific teaching and learning processes in the complex set of conditions of foreign language teaching, as well as the history of methods of foreign language teaching .

In addition to this scientific work, Hüllen's association activities are also noteworthy. Since 1970 he has been involved in the General Association of German Philologists (later Professional Association of Modern Foreign Languages), whose magazine Neusprachliche Mitteilungen published from 1972 to 1982. From 1981, together with colleagues from foreign language teaching and learning research (in short: language teaching research), he established the annual spring conference on research into foreign language teaching, which takes place at Rauischholzhausen Castle . The initiative for the German Society for Foreign Language Research (DGFF) emerged from their group in 1988 , which he founded in 1989 with colleagues from foreign language didactics and language teaching research and of which he was the founding chairman until 1992; He was also responsible for shaping the DGFF's publication organ, the journal for foreign language research , for many years. He was also President of the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas from 1992 to 2002 .

Research priorities

Hüllen's research interests were broad. Be highlighted primarily foreign language teaching and methods history of foreign language teaching , intercultural communication , word formation , technical languages , text linguistics , semiotics and history of linguistic theory .
