The German Society for Music Psychology e. V. (DGM) is Europe's largest national scientific society in this field. It was founded in 1983 by Klaus-Ernst Behne , Günter Kleinen and Helga de la Motte-Haber .

Its aim is to promote music psychology research, young academics and the music psychology discussion. The society is interdisciplinary between musicology , psychology , social and cultural studies , acoustics , musician's medicine and music education and is open to interested parties from all professional groups and academic orientations. It maintains contacts with related organizations at home and abroad (e.g. Working Group for Music Education Research (AMPF), German Society for Psychology (DGPs), German Society for Acoustics (DEGA), European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM ), Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC), Society for Music Psychology and Education (SEMPRE), Asia-Pacific Society for the Cognitive Science of Music (APSCOM)).

A public conference takes place every year at different locations; In addition, the DGM has an editorial board publish the peer-reviewed yearbook “Music Psychology”.
