The German ILCO e. V. is the self-help association for people with a stoma ( artificial anus or urinary diversion ) in Germany. Colon cancer
has been officially included since 2005 on behalf of the ILCO.

The name ILCO is formed from the first letters of ileum (small intestine) and colon (large intestine). In Europe, the name ILCO is very common in national stoma self-help associations, e.g. B. ILCO Serbia, Latvia-ILCO, SlovILCO.

aims

The German ILCO has committed itself to assist all those affected in Germany so that they can act independently and independently with the stoma and colon cancer. The association achieves this through:

  • Discussions with people who are equally affected about living with a stoma or living with colon cancer with ILCO volunteers on the phone, at the meetings of around 290 local groups and as part of the ILCO visitor service (visits by ILCO employees before and after the operation in the hospital and at home)
  • Information at events (local, regional, national), with publications on colostomy / ileostomy , urostomy , irrigation, etc. and via the quarterly members' magazine ILCO-PRAXIS
  • Mediation for specialist advice
  • Independent representation of interests in stoma and intestinal cancer-related matters at health insurance companies, pension offices, in health and social policy in the areas of medicine, rehabilitation, pharmaceutical and ostomy care, social help and self-help
  • Eliminating the taboo of the stoma and colon cancer through education and public relations
  • Commitment to high-quality, quality-assured professional care and ensuring that the necessary ostomy items and medicines are available without unreasonable financial burden

There are also special meetings and events for younger people in the "Young ILCO +/- 35" group.

Membership data

The association has a total of 7,235 members, of which 5,941 are affected themselves, 480 are relatives of those affected and 814 are listed as supporting members (as of 2017).
