The German School Managua is a German school abroad in the Nicaraguan city of Managua with a kindergarten, elementary school and secondary level.

history

The first idea to found a German school in Nicaragua was born during a meeting of the "German Club" in 1934. A committee was formed and a school was set up. Nicaraguan authorities and the German government immediately recognized the new school. The history of this school ended with the Second World War .

At the end of 1967 the idea was taken up again and in August 1968 a new school started its work with a German kindergarten in a quinta on Carretera Sur. In 1972, a plot of land was purchased at km 10.5 on Carretera Sur and a new school was built. In 1976 a secondary school was added. From 1980/81 the German School Managua ran up to the 11th grade and the first students were able to take the local school leaving examination.

building

The school's property in the Carretera Sur district of Managua houses the teaching and administration buildings, a physics and a biology / chemistry laboratory facility, a teachers' room, a modern library building, a sports and basketball field, a swimming pool and a student cafeteria.

There are three school buildings: one for the elementary school ( Primaria ), one for the intermediate level ( Secundaria baja ) and one for the upper level ( Secundaria alta ) as well as for the IB course. The new kindergarten building and its area with its own swimming pool were inaugurated in 2009 and are located 200 meters outside the school itself.

curriculum

The curriculum of the German School Managua is based on the curriculum of the German state of Baden-Württemberg . In addition to Spanish, German including German ways of life and history are taught from the first grade. In the upper level, most subjects are taught in German, with the exception of chemistry, ethics and philosophy, Spanish, English and German. The German lessons take place separately: on the one hand, the German foreign speakers (DaF students), on the other hand the German native speakers (DaM students) are taught.

The German School Managua is one of the few German schools abroad that have been participating in the “Mixed-Language International Baccalaureate” (IB) project since the 2003/04 school year.
