The German language in Togo is taught as a foreign language today.

Togo is a multilingual country. The official language is French . The national languages ​​are Ewe and Kabiyé. Around 100,000 people speak German as a foreign language in Togo.

Traces of the colonial era

Some Togoers have German surnames, such as B. the name Duke, which is widespread in Lomé . Localities still have German surnames, for example Garbadé in Wawa. Colonial buildings and objects from the German colonial era have been preserved in Togo , such as the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church in Lomé . At the University of Lomé, German studies are taught in the areas of regional studies, literature and linguistics.
