The German Association for International Law (DVIR) is the German national group of the International Law Association (ILA), which was founded in 1873 and is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations in the world.

The DVIR pursues the task of cultivating the science of international law in the spirit of international understanding , and for this purpose organizes scientific conferences with national and international participation, in which it publishes its work results.

The association, founded in 1912 and re-established after the Nazi era in 1951, is based in Heidelberg .

As part of their work, great importance is attached to the connection between science and practice. At the annual general meetings at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, academics and practitioners meet to exchange information and opinions and to work on jointly interesting work. A scientific program is offered for this purpose. The areas of law dealt with include international law , conflict of laws and the areas of private law , public law and criminal law that deal with international issues .

In addition, there are various working groups, such as on air and space law , world trade law or international investment protection law.

The work of the worldwide umbrella organization of the DVIR, the International Law Association (ILA), essentially takes place in different, internationally composed committees, in which members of the DVIR are usually represented and actively participate. In addition, every two years the ILA conferences are held in different regions of the world with the participation of members of the DVIR. Members of the DVIR actively represent German international law science and practice on an international level.
