The German tiger beetle ( Cylindera germanica ) is a ground beetle from the subfamily of the tiger beetles (Cicindelinae).
features
The beetles are 8 to 11 millimeters long. The wings are green, olive or copper with small white spots on the edge. The flyable beetles appear from May to September, but in contrast to other tiger beetles, they mainly move continuously. The eggs are deposited in small holes in the bottom. Each larva digs its own living tube in which it ambushes its prey, especially ants. After two years, the larvae pupate and in the following spring leave their hiding place in the ground as beetles.
Occurrence
The species lives in marly or loamy dry grassland and field edges in open or semi-open places. The animals prefer habitats with low and patchy vegetation. The beetle has become very rare and is therefore particularly protected in Germany according to the Federal Species Protection Ordinance and classified as threatened with extinction.
Way of life
The beetle is satisfied with very small, open areas on the ground. Due to the exceptional summer in 2003, the species showed significant increases in numbers of individuals and also in locations where they were detected, but these were not permanent. One possible reason for this phenomenon could be the fact that the extreme heat and drought caused plants to die, creating a patchy vegetation pattern that is preferred by the species. In the meantime, most of these gaps have closed again.
