German Stenographers Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Stenografenbund EV (DStB) Federal Association for Information Processing, Word Processing and Stenography , based in Bad Nauheim, is an umbrella organization of stenography associations . This association, in which the majority of the German stenographers' associations are organized, maintains the German unity shorthand and advocates the interests of the affiliated associations.

history

The association emerged from the "German Stenografenbund Gabelsberger " founded in 1868 , which originally used Gabelsberger's shorthand , but in 1925 switched to the German unified shorthand. This change was decided "almost unanimously" on the 12th German Stenographers' Day in Munich on July 28, 1925. The name "Deutscher Stenografenbund Gabelsberger" was initially retained in order to keep the memory of Gabelsberger high. Just one year later, however, the addition "Gabelsberger" was dropped, because the "wanted to be a collection point for all associations for unified shorthand, including those that did not emerge from the Gabelsberger camp". The opponents of this decision then founded the association of the same name "Deutscher Stenografenbund Gabelsberger" and claimed to be the legitimate continuation of the association founded in 1868. However, they were unable to enforce this claim in court. From then on, the German Stenographers Association (formerly the German Stenographers Association Gabelsberger [from 1868]) and the newly founded German Stenographers Association Gabelsberger [from 1925] existed in parallel.

The other associations of the other German shorthand systems (including, for example, the Stenografenbund Stolze-Schrey, the Stenografenbund Scheithauer, the Reichsbund für Deutsche Kurzschrift [National Stenography], the Main Association Arendsscher Stenographers, the German Stenotachygrafen-Verband, Verband für Volksverkehrskurzschrift [Schrey] and the Association for Rollers World Shorthand) predominantly took a stance against the German unified shorthand and stick to their systems. When the National Socialists came to power in 1933, however, the political goal was to “bring all shorthand associations and clubs in Germany into line” in order to “create a uniform overall organization in shorthand areas and take all measures that are suitable to promote and subordinate unified shorthand Exclusion of any other system to be used and maintained in public authorities, in school teaching and in the private sector ”. In the course of this endeavor, the German Stenographers Association was formed on September 30, 1933. While many associations (including those that previously had other systems) joined the German Stenographers 'Association, the German Stenographers' Association Gabelsberger [from 1925] decided to dissolve it. During the Second World War, the work of the German stenographers became increasingly difficult. With an official circular on April 6, 1943, in the course of the "necessities of total warfare", the stenographers' associations were shut down as far as possible. The National Socialists confiscated all of the cash and even parts of the furniture. Shorthand lessons in Germany also came to a complete standstill with the chaos of war of 1944/45 at the latest.

After the Second World War, in 1947/48 it was re-established as the “Deutscher Stenografenbund”, which resumed the tasks of the previous organizations. The first chairmen of the re-established Stenographers Association were Josef Brandenburg, Cologne (1947–1950), Karl Rieser, Bad Nauheim (1950–1957) and Dr. Fritz Haeger, Lennestadt-Altenhundem (1957–1962)

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a so-called wing pen , the traditional symbol of the stenographers.

activity

The Stenografenbund understands its function in the "dissemination of information processing, office communication, word processing, ten-finger typing and shorthand , in particular the official German standard shorthand , as general educational goods and rational forms of work to promote personal and professional development, supplemented by imparting knowledge of economic and social relationships ”. Every year the Stenografenbund organizes a German championship, a senior championship and the “federal cup writing” in various disciplines in shorthand and in text entry and processing. Regina Hofmann is currently serving as President and Reiner Karbowski and Thorsten Sahm as Vice-Presidents of the Stenographers Association. The youth organization of the German Stenographers Association is the federal youth for computers, shorthand and media , which, among other things, carries out the annual, decentralized federal youth letter.
