The German Tower ( Spanish Torre Alemana ), also called Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower), is a 29 meter high brick clock tower in Lima . It stands in front of the “La Casona” cultural center of the National University of San Marcos at the intersection of Avenida Abancay and Avenida Nicolás de Piérola in the historic center of the Peruvian capital.

history

It was given to the Peruvian people on July 28, 1921 by the Germans living in Peru on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Peru's independence. The foundation stone was laid on July 30, 1921 in the presence of the Archbishop of Lima, Monseñor Emilio Lisson, as well as the German Ambassador Hans Paul von Humboldt-Dachroeden and the Mayor of Lima. The inauguration of the finished tower took place on July 10, 1923. The
architect was Friedrich Jordan Barkholtz, who came from Hamburg and whose brother lived in the Peruvian province of Chanchamayo .

Inscription and clock

Above the entrance to the tower, the inscription “La colonia alemana a la República del Perú en el primer centenario de su independencia 1821–1921” is placed in the lintel, above a soldier's head with a steel helmet. On the back there is a bronze plaque with the German inscription “1821. July 28th. 1921 In memory of the birth of the freedom of Peru, donated by the Germans of the country ”.
At 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. the carillon of the tower clock plays the 1st stanza of the Peruvian national anthem. It was overhauled several times together with the watch, most recently in 2001 at the instigation of the brothers Horst and Günther Hippauf and with the support of the Peruvian branch of Faber-Castell , of which Hippauf was director.
