former German house

The German House was a building owned by the association of the same name in the city of Znojmo in the Czech Republic .

history

In 1870 the German Citizens' Association was founded in Znojmo . The main task of this association was to maintain sociability and friendship, but it was also intended to be a place of resistance against the increasing hostility towards Germany. The founding of the association, which set up its first clubhouse in the Znojmo brewery , included a library, the planting and beautification association and a museum .

It was decided in 1881 to set up their own clubhouse. The building at Brantstrasse 1 (later Brantova tř ., Today Pontassievská near Mariánské náměstí - Marienplatz ), financed by donations, was carried out by the Znojmo-based builder Josef Schweighofer and completed in 1882.

The renaming of the association to Deutsches Haus on December 22, 1913 was intended to give the association a broader personnel base and at the same time to make the Deutsches Haus as a club house a common property of all people of German origin living in the Znaim area.

During the First World War, the German House was temporarily used as a barracks.

After expansion and modernization in 1930, the German House had one large and four smaller halls. There was also a hotel and an inn with a garden, dance floor and covered bowling alley. Club members also had a library with around 8,000 books and a reading room with numerous newspapers and magazines, as well as a playroom.

The building near Mariánské náměstí , which later became known as the Hotel Znojmo , is now owned by Česká spořitelna and is said to be architecturally unsuccessful, which makes a satisfactory design of the busy square difficult.
