The Hostan Brewery ( Czech Pivovar Hostan ) was a brewery in Znojmo (Znaim) in the Czech Republic .

history

The Vienna city charter granted to the South Moravian city of Znojmo in 1278 gave the city the right to brew and serve beer, among other things.

In order to increase the economic viability of the two bourgeois breweries in the city, the city council tried in 1619 to limit the citizens' right to serve wine. A related complaint of the citizens against the restriction of their rights was decided in 1626 by a general Montenegro in their favor. Probably in 1669 or 1677 the city council of Znojmo banned the citizens from consuming wine or beer in the pub of the Propstei Pöltenberg at the so-called Rabenstein an der Thaya .

In 1720 the two breweries finally gave up. The competition against the cheap wine, also made in Znojmo, was no longer profitable.

In the same year, the city council decided to build a brewery in the former stables of the Znojmo outer bailey, which had become the property of the city in 1710. For this purpose, an annex was built on the north side of the castle as well as a guest garden between the brewery and the robber's tower, which collapsed in 1892. In 1861 the brewery was acquired by the Maural family and rebuilt between 1864 and 1872 according to plans by Josef Unger and widened to the south. Further modernization measures were carried out in the following years under the master brewer Josef Schweighofer.

From 1885 under Rudolf Wotzilka there was again a second brewery in the city. In 1890 this was enlarged and in 1900 it was switched to steam cooking.

As a result of the state border south of the city, which emerged after the collapse of the Danube monarchy , both Znojmo breweries in Lower Austria lost their sales areas, so that in 1923 the Wotzilka brewery gave up beer production and switched to malt production . The " Znojmo Brewery and Malzfabrik, joint stock company in Znojmo " was created through the merger with the Maural brewery in Znojmo Castle in the same year .

In the inter-war period, the Znojmo brewery employed around 90 people with an annual production of around 50,000 hectoliters. The beer was sold from Znojmo to Nikolsburg , Dürnholz , Jamnitz , Jarmeritz , Zlabings , Teltsch , Mährisch-Budwitz , Trebitsch , Misslitz and even to Pressburg with a few trucks and carriages .

The malt house in the former Wotzilka brewery was expanded and switched to electrical operation at the same time. 10 to 15 employees produced malt here for their own use and for export to Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Austria.

After 1945 the " Znojmo Brewery and Malzfabrik, joint stock company in Znojmo " was nationalized. It was only after the Velvet Revolution that the Hostan brewery was privatized again. It is owned by the Starobrno brewery in Brno , which in turn is owned by the Dutch brewery group Heineken .

The closure of the brewery announced in June 2009 and the relocation of the production of Hostan beer to Brno have now been completed. One of the reasons for the shutdown of the Hostan brewery was its poor accessibility to the location in Znojmo through the historic city center.
