Edward Wojtas (born March 1, 1955 in Wólka Modrzejowa in the Powiat Lipski in the Masovian Voivodeship ; † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk ) was a Polish politician, Sejm Marshal in the Lublin Voivodeship and since 2007 a member of the Polish Parliament, the Sejm .

Life

In 1979 he finished his studies at the Faculty of Economics of the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin . Since 1976 he was a member of the Polish United People's Party ( Zjednoczone Stronnictwo Ludowe ), then he joined the Polish Peasant Party ( Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe , PSL ). Since 2005 he has headed the board of PSL in the Lublin Voivodeship.

From 1995 to 1997 he was the deputy director of the health department in the Lublin Voivodeship Office. From 1997 to 1998 he worked as the general director of this office. From 1998 to 2007 he was a councilor in the Sejm of the Lublin Voivodeship. On December 2, 2002, he was appointed Sejm Marshal of the Lublin Voivodeship. However, this decision was overturned by the voivod and Edward Wojtas lost his position on January 11, 2003. He was again Sejm Marshal of the voivodship on May 23, 2005 and held the post until December 1, 2006.

In the Polish parliamentary elections in 2007 he won a seat as a member of the PSL. In the constituency of Lublin he received 8,375 votes. He ran unsuccessfully in the 2009 European elections in Poland .

On April 10, 2010, Wojtas was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland.

Posthumously Wojtas was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Komandorski Orderu Odrodzenia Polski) on April 16, 2010 .
