history
In 1243 the city of Brno was granted the right to brew beer by King Wenceslas I of Bohemia . In 1872 the owners of the former monastery brewery, Josef Mandl and Hermann Hayek, decided to build a large, modern brewery, which they called the Altbrünner Brewery (Czech: Starobrněnský Pivovar ). At the end of the 19th century, the brewery's output was already 236,490 hectoliters. Until the First World War , the output could be increased to 250,000 hectoliters annually. Back then, beer was not only drunk in Brno, it was also exported to all of Austria-Hungary and Poland . In 1918 the brewery became the property of the Moravian Bank, in the new Czechoslovak state the export focus was now on the Slovak part of the state. During the Second World War , the brewery was placed under German administration, and in November 1944 it was badly damaged by bombs. In the 20th century, schnapps was distilled alongside beer. After the Second World War the brewery was nationalized; In 1992 it was privatized again. In 1994 Starobrno was taken over by the Austrian Brau-Beteiligungs AG . Heineken has owned the majority of this company since 2003. Starobrno was separated from the company now trading as the Brewing Union and formed into Heineken Česká republika as with the Krušovice and Velké Březno breweries . In 2009 more than 1,000,000 hectoliters of beer were brewed for the first time.
