Jemnice (German Jamnitz , older also Jemnitz , Gemnitz and Jempnitz ) is a town in the Czech Republic with 4,300 inhabitants in the Moravian region of Vysočina . The city is a member of the Jemnice microregion .
history
The economic and cultural center is located on a hill above the Želetavka River . For strategic reasons and for better defense, it was founded in 1227 at the behest of King Ottokar I on a rock above the river. However, the construction of the fortification was not finished until the 14th century.
On February 4, 1327, the city received further privileges from King John and became a Free Royal City . Jemnice was hit twice by the plague in the 19th century and the town center was badly damaged during the fire in 1832.
