Babice (German Babitz ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic . It is located nine kilometers northwest of Moravské Budějovice and belongs to the Okres Třebíč .

geography

Babice is located in a hilly landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands on the right slope above the basin of the Šebkovický potok. To the east rises the Tašky (582 m), southeast of the Brdo (580 m) and in the northwest of the Kozí vrch (574 m). To the south of the village lies the Martinice desert.

Neighboring towns are Bolíkovice in the north, Loukovice in the northeast, Šebkovice in the east, Nové Dvory and Horní Lažany in the south, Lesonice in the southwest and Cidlina in the west.

history

Babice was first mentioned in 1349 as Pabicz . At that time, the owner was Vilém z Babic, who left half of the villages Babice, Martinice, Loukovice and part of Vesce as well as half of the church patronage to the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star . After this foundation he took his seat on Bolíkovice and called himself Vilém z Bolíkovic. In 1387 he sold his rule to Jaroslav von Sternberg and in 1437 they bought back the z Bolíkovic, who then called themselves z Babic again. In 1495 it was sold to Messrs. Z Bačkovic and from 1610 the Hrubčický z Čechtína became owners, who attached the Babice domain to Lesonice . In 1614 a major fire destroyed the entire village including the church and rectory. After the fire, the place was rebuilt and the church was also rebuilt. But a little later the place was destroyed again during the Thirty Years War and around 1640 the church was restored.

The first news about a village school comes from the year 1721, but it is older, as the teacher died at the age of 79 at that time. From the year 1771 a big bad harvest has been handed down and beggars moved through the area who brought in the cholera . The epidemic lasted a whole year and 150 people died in the church district instead of the usual 45 deaths. In 1775 a peasant revolt broke out because of the great hardship in the entire Lesonice estate. During the Napoleonic Wars on November 20, 1805, French troops under Marshal Bernadotte passed through Babice and Bolíkovice. In the same year the Veronica Chapel was built west of the village by the Sýčka forest, around which legends related to the French are entwined.

After the replacement of patrimonial Babice, which was finally subject to the Sádek rule, became part of the Znojmo political district in 1850 . At that time Babice, Bolíkovice, Lesonice and Cidlina formed one municipality. In 1867 Lesonice became independent, in 1875 Cidlina and finally in 1919 Bolíkovice. Since 1896 the village was assigned to the newly established district administration Mährisch Budwitz .

In 1960 Bolíkovice was incorporated and in 1985 Babice lost its independence and became part of Lesonice . Since 1990 Babice and the district Bolíkovice have again formed a separate municipality. In 1998 the church was renovated.

The Babice case

After the Second World War, the communist rulers found it difficult to gain a foothold in the population, which was largely Catholic. On July 2, 1951, an armed attack took place in Babice on a meeting of the local communist national committee, in which three of the four committee members were killed and which led to one of the largest communist show trials in Czechoslovakia . In several trials held in Jihlava , eleven people, including two priests, were executed and 111 were sentenced to long prison terms. In addition, there were resettlements and kinship-like disadvantages.

However, the true background of this crime has not been clarified. In particular , there are different views on the person of the main culprit Ladislav Malý , who stormed the committee meeting in the school with three other people and shot the four people present. Malý, who was caught the day after the crime and shot together with an accomplice, is seen as a fanatical anti-communist or an unpredictable alcoholic. On the other hand, there is also talk of a commission act by the State Security Service , which should create the occasion for show trials against the church and the rural population that have already been prepared. These events later became known as the "Babice Case" or "Operation Babice". After the Velvet Revolution, all those convicted of the Babice case were rehabilitated.
