The German Lock and Fittings Museum is the only scientifically managed museum for locking and security technology in the world. It is based in Velbert in the Mettmann district . It was founded in 1928 as a local museum in the " Old Mayor's House ". In 1982 they moved to the "Forum Niederberg".

history

The history of security technology began over 4,000 years ago and has continued to develop in close relation to the culture and way of life of the people.

When people began to settle down and build houses, they recognized the need to secure their belongings with locking systems. The first larger locking systems are known to us from Roman times . With industrialization in the 19th century, the area of lock construction also experienced a surge in innovation. The first large castle factories were built in Velbert towards the end of the 19th century. As a result, the practice of making locks in home work , which had been practiced until then, declined. Since July 15, 2019, the museum has been permanently closed due to relocation. The expected reopening is planned for the end of 2020 in the Villa Herminghaus .

exhibition

On a tour, locks and locking systems from ancient times, as well as the tools and machines that were used to manufacture locks and locking systems, are shown. The permanent exhibition also takes a look at the latest innovations in locking technology such as electronic transponder locks and biometric procedures for access control.
