The locomotives Deutz OMZ 122 meter gauge was meter gauge , diesel mechanical locomotives with the wheel arrangement B. They were a narrow-gauge version of the built in large numbers Deutz OMZ 122 R . Two examples are known that have been preserved as memorials.

After the OMZ 122 R , which was produced in large numbers , the manufacturer KHD had a type program to manufacture locomotives with this type of engine for gauges from 600 mm to 1,076 mm. There are two known locomotives that were made for meter gauge. One locomotive was delivered to the Langeoog Island Railway in 1937 , the second locomotive was delivered to the Helgoland Marine Harbor Construction Office .

The IL Kö 2 has been with the Langeoog island railway for its entire operating life. The locomotive has got some modifications there, e.g. B. the line view for the train driver was improved by additional front windows. In 1982 the locomotive was retired. It was erected as a memorial in front of Langeoog train station .

The second locomotive was used from 1941 by the Helgoland naval port construction office. In 1943 it was moved to the island of Wangerooge .

After the Second World War it first came to the municipality of Wangerooge and from there in 1947 to the Spiekerooger Inselbahn . The locomotive was supposed to replace the horse operation of the island railway with motorized traffic. On June 1, 1949, the locomotive pulled the first train. The power of 40 hp was sufficient to transport the trains, which were still short at the time, consisting of up to three horse-drawn tram cars and a maximum of one freight car.

When the horse-drawn carriages were replaced by wider narrow-gauge railway cars, the locomotive was given platforms with railings to improve the view of the route for the train driver. The width of the locomotive changed to 2,300 mm. In 1965 the locomotive was replaced by locomotive 6 .

In 1969 she first came to the German Railway Association . The processing for the museum operation did not materialize. That is why the locomotive was set up in front of the station building in Harlesiel in 2000 in memory of the military railway in Wangerooge.

Constructive features

The locomotives were a bit narrower and shorter than the standard gauge locomotives . A visible difference was initially the equipment of the driver's cab with only one central round front window. There was also the difference in the running gear that disk wheels with cutouts were used for the meter gauge locomotives .

The Deutz OMZ 122 engine is a water-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine with cylinders arranged in series, which, via a multi-plate clutch, drove a mechanical gearbox with reversing gear. The drive axle is driven from the gearbox output via a chain, the other axle is driven via coupling rods . This form of construction saved space, and the running smoothness is increased compared to vehicles with a jackshaft.

The suspension of the locomotives was made with leaf springs , which are arranged above the axles. The wagons were coupled with a so-called triangle coupling ; the locomotives did not have a compressed air brake for train braking. The sanding system was designed in a drop shape, a sand downpipe was present between the wheels.
