Dharampur ( Gujarati : ધરમપુર) is a town with a population of around 25,000 in the extreme southeast of the Indian state of Gujarat .

Dharampur lies at a height of approx. 75 m above sea level. d. M. in the western foothills of the northern part of the Western Ghats about 100 km (driving distance) south of the port and megacity Surat . The Indian metropolis of Mumbai is located approx. 200 km south. The Portuguese city of Daman until 1961 is located about 60 km southwest. The climate is hot even by Indian standards and extremely rainy in the monsoon months from June to October.

Approx. 85% of the population are Hindus and approximately 14.5% are Muslims ; the rest goes to other denominations such as Sikhs , Jains and Christians. The proportion of men and women is roughly the same.
economy
The place was and is the mercantile and craft center of the region for centuries. Today there are numerous hotels of all categories.
history
Dharampur was founded in 1766 by Raja Dharamdev, the then ruler of the princely state of the same name ; In 1802 it came under British rule, but the princely state retained extensive autonomy rights until it was integrated into the Indian state in 1948. He played a not insignificant role in trade with the Portuguese and British .

- The Lakshmi Temple was built in the late 19th century; its architecture reveals strong European influences.
- The Shrimad Rajchandra Mission building on the outskirts was not built until the end of the 20th century.
